Spontion translates a phrase and writes its pronunciation the way your own language is spelled, so you can say it without learning a new alphabet.

Common questions

Why is the translation not appearing?

Spontion uses Apple's on-device translation languages. The first time you use a language pair, iOS asks to download the language; after that, translation works offline. If nothing happens, open the iOS Settings app › Apps › Translate › Downloaded Languages and check that both languages are installed.

How do I change the language the pronunciation is written in?

Open Settings inside Spontion (the gear at the top left) and choose Your Reading Language. It is independent from the languages you translate between.

The pronunciation is not exactly how a native speaker says it.

The respelling is an easy reading aid. Some sounds do not exist in your language, and Spontion shows a small hint when that happens. Tap Play for the real sound.

Clear or Natural?

Clear reads word by word and is best for beginners. Natural shows how words link and shorten in real speech.

Practice says "Try Again" although I read it correctly.

Practice listens with on-device speech recognition. Try a quieter place, hold the phone closer, and read at normal speed. Only the words that need work are highlighted.

Can I use Spontion from other apps?

Yes. Select text in any app, tap Share, then Pronunciation. You can also add the Phrase of the Day widget, use the Control Center control to start a conversation, or ask Siri to "Translate with Spontion".
